Election 2020: voting overload?

Guernsey residents: Not sure where to start in choosing how to vote in this election? Finding it difficult to keep track of candidates and who deserves your vote?

The election on 7th October will be a very different experience for Guernsey, as we try out for the first time an Island-wide voting system. Instead of electing five or six deputies from within your Parish, you now need to choose up to 38 from 119 candidates.

You can find out more about candidates and the election process at www.election2020.gg

It will take a committed voter to do due diligence on all of the candidates. However, you don’t have to use all 38 votes. It has got to be worth exercising your democratic rights, even if it is just to vote for one person you know of who stands for issues you believe in.

At Ouro Consulting, we would love to see better solutions to enable democratic participation and community empowerment. As a new start-up consultancy providing business analysis, process design, and support for integrating new and improved ways of working, we are keen to take on projects that make tricky processes easier for people. Even better if we can in some way contribute to making our Guernsey community stronger.

In the meantime, we have developed a simple tool to take away some of the headache of our own decision-making process this election, which we are happy to share with anyone who might find it useful. You can use it to rank candidates against your own criteria for who gets your vote and to whittle the field down to a printable aide memoire for when you fill in your ballot paper.

All you need is Microsoft Excel and a laptop or desktop computer. You can download the tool here. When you open the link, please check out the “Read Me” document first. It will only take a moment and will set you off on the right foot! The tool itself has been designed to be intuitive and instructions are included within it.

We hope you find it useful.
